Overview:

  • A medical assistant float is a position in which the medical professional performs miscellaneous duties within a variety of specialties for different providers and clinics. These duties may include clinical, laboratory, clerical, administrative, and/or front office. A medical assistant float should be able to meet and satisfy the requirements of both a patient service representative and a medical assistant.

 

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Duties (may include, but not limited to):
    • Taking medical histories
    • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
    • Preparing patients for examination
    • Assisting the provider during exams
    • Performing basic laboratory tests
    • Instructing patients about medication and special diets
    • Preparing and administering medications as directed by the provider
    • Prescription refills
    • Drawing blood
    • EKG's
    • Removing sutures and changing dressings
    • Administering vaccines
  • Administration Duties (may include, but not limited to):
    • Answering telephones, checking voicemail, returning phones calls
    • Using different computer applications
    • Welcoming patients
    • Updating patient charts
    • Filling out insurance forms or other documents such as FMLA
    • Scheduling appointments
    • Arranging diagnostic imaging and/or laboratory services
    • Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping

Expected Educational Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a medical assistant program with certification is highly preferred, OR 3+ years in a direct medical assistant role
  • Current CPR certification
  • Certificate in Phlebotomy is preferred
  • Incomparable organizational and communication skills
  • Multilingual skills may be preferred

Experience and Additional Skills:

  • Prior experience as a medical assistant in a provider's office with good computer skills is highly preferred
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the different insurance companies and their policies
  • Knowledge pertaining to medical billing, terminology, and ICD 10 codes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in addition to effective communication skills
  • Multitasking abilities
  • Time management skills
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods, Lifting up to 50lbs.
  • Repetitive motion associated with operating a computer and other office equipment.
  • Inside, climate-controlled working conditions.
